Sample Letter/Talking Points:

Subject: Grant Parole for SGT Jose Barco, Purple Heart Veteran

Dear [Senator/Representative's Name],I am writing to urge your immediate intervention in the case of SGT Jose Barco, a U.S. Army Purple Heart veteran currently detained by ICE and facing unjust deportation. SGT Barco honorably served two tours in Iraq, where he sustained a traumatic brain injury and earned a Purple Heart. He came to the U.S. as a child, grew up here with his parents and siblings. He also has a wife and daughter. His citizenship application was tragically overlooked during his service. Despite serving his time for a past conviction, he is now being denied the right to remain in the country he fought for, and has even been rejected by Venezuela. This is a profound injustice. I respectfully request that you advocate for SGT Barco's immediate release on parole and support his pathway to citizenship. We must stand by our veterans. Thank you for your urgent attention to this critical matter.

Jose was incredibly young when he committed to serving our country, just 18 years old when he first deployed to Iraq in 2004. He was still only 23 years old when he received his honorable discharge in 2008, carrying the profound weight of his combat experiences and injuries.

Sgt Barco felt like he would be leaving his team behind if he did not return.

Since his release from prison, he has been subjected to a constant shuffling between detention centers, having been moved between at least six different ICE/GEO facilities in Colorado & Texas. These frequent and sudden transfers have significantly impeded his access to health care and legal counsel adding immense difficulty to his fight for freedom.
