Why We Support SGT Jose Barco

Our support for SGT Jose Barco is rooted in fundamental principles of justice, honor, and the responsibility owed to those who serve.

  1. Unquestionable Sacrifice: SGT Barco did not hesitate to answer the call, deploying to a war zone and sustaining life-altering injuries in defense of our nation. His Purple Heart is irrefutable proof of his profound sacrifice. To deport him is to betray the very men and women we ask to put their lives on the line.
  2. Systemic Failures: His case tragically highlights systemic issues in how we treat non-citizen service members and veterans. The initial loss of his naturalization paperwork was a critical administrative error that directly contributed to his current predicament. Furthermore, the inadequate support for his traumatic brain injury and mental health post-service represents a grave failing by the institutions responsible for veteran care.
  3. Humanitarian Crisis: SGT Barco has lived in the U.S. since age four, has a loving wife and daughter here, and has no meaningful ties to Venezuela, a country that has now formally refused to accept him. Forcing his removal would be a humanitarian tragedy, rendering him a man without a country, despite his courageous service.
  4. Setting a Precedent: The outcome of SGT Barco's case will send a powerful message about how the United States values its veterans. Allowing his deportation undermines the very fabric of military service and sets a dangerous precedent for all who serve under the American flag, regardless of their place of birth.

SGT Jose Barco fought for us. Now, it is our turn to fight for him. He deserves to reunite with his family and heal in the country he bravely defended."

Jose was incredibly young when he committed to serving our country, just 18 years old when he first deployed to Iraq in 2004. He was still only 23 years old when he received his honorable discharge in 2008, carrying the profound weight of his combat experiences and injuries.

Since his release from prison, he has been subjected to a constant shuffling between detention centers, having been moved between at least five different ICE/GEO facilities in Colorado & Texas. These frequent and sudden transfers have significantly impeded his access to health care and legal counsel adding immense difficulty to his fight for freedom.
